Lev Garbar Wins CYSO Inspiration Award
Lev Garbar, IBB co-principal cornet and band director in Illinois Community Consolidated School District 89 in Glen Ellyn was awarded the 2014 "Note of Excellence" award at the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra's annual gala on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Chicago's Four Seasons Hotel.
Acclaimed columnist and film critic, Richard Roeper emceed the event. More than 300 patrons were in attendance at the event which helped raise money for the CYSO's music training and education programs. Along with musical performances by the CYSO, awards were given to three outstanding categories of support for the CYSO.
Garbar won the "Note of Excellence " award for Music Inspiration. Terrance Malone Gray was honored for Leadership and Service, and Luminarts Cultural Foundation of the Union League of Chicago was recognized for being a Champion for Youth and Music.
Garbar's former student at Glen Crest Middle School, Matthew Sampey, now a freshman at Glenbard South High School, nominated Garbar for this year's Music Inspiration Award.
Garbar, who majored in trumpet performance at Mannes College the New School for Music in New York and at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, has studied with a number of premier trumpet teachers including Robert Sullivan, principal trumpet, Cincinnati Symphony.
