Mark Ponzo Joins IBB As Co-Principal Cornetist

9 Sep 2013

Mark Ponzo, professor of music at Northern Illinois University and former member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Mexico City Philharmonic and Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, has joined the Illinois Brass Band as co-principal cornetist. He will share the position with long-time IBB principal cornetist Lev Garbar.

"We are thrilled to have a musician of Mark's caliber join our ensemble," said IBB President Bill Kaempfe. "We are already programming some pieces that will enable our audiences to enjoy his artistry."

Ponzo, who holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music, has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Music of the Baroque, Illinois Chamber Symphony, Chicago Sinfonietta, and numerous other ensembles. He gives an average of 20 recitals a year at music schools throughout the nation. He has also released three solo recordings and published 26 method books for trumpet.

"Even before he opens his case Mark's accomplishments establish him as a world-class musician but when he gets that horn out - wow! Our audiences will be amazed and delighted when they hear him play," said IBB Music Director Stephen Squires.

Lev Garbar, who will continue as co-principal cornetist, said: "Mark is an amazing player. I consider it a privilege to be able to share the stage with him."
